The Nahual changes how you fight and where you can go. The jaguar climbs what you can’t. The eagle reaches ruins no path leads to.
Defeat a god’s guardian and wear its ring. Tláloc’s lightning runs down your arrows. Ehécatl’s wind lifts what you couldn’t move.
Fall in battle and you wake in Mictlán. Fight your way back to the land of the living.
Who you’ll meet
The Marked Warrior
The best fighter in his calpulli, and the first to act before thinking. One mistake still follows him. When a god offers a way to fix it, he takes the deal without reading the terms.
Lord of Mictlán
He rules the dead, all nine levels of them. He is the voice in Tzilacatzin’s dream, and he offers to help. Nobody stops to ask what the Lord of the Dead gets out of it.
Herald of Tláloc
Tláloc’s hound waits under the water. It has a hand at the end of its tail, and it drags down whoever the rain god has chosen for Tlalocan.
The world
At Teotihuacan the gods lit a fire and waited for one of them to jump. Nanahuatzin, the smallest and sickest of them, went first. He rose as the Sun, and he would not move until the others paid in blood.
That debt is why Tenochtitlan feeds the sky, and why the Fifth Sun can die. The world is open, from the chinampas on the lake to the cenotes in the jungle.
